My own experience with Wikis

I have to admit, that I am working the first time with a Wiki myself.

We use the Wiki of Stud IP in one of the classes of DaF. I must say I experience it to be a very helpful task to exchange opinions and to work individually at any time. The teacher has control and even the students have, as they can delete or add posts.

The only thing that is striking here at the beginning are the new methods of tools that are normally provided when you write a text in word. In the Wiki you have no toolbar and people found alternative methods for it.

As we use the Wiki in the classroom of the University, I could as well imagine to use it in a FL classroom. It gives the teachers many more and new opportunities of creating tasks and especially controlling the results.

Pupils can work more freely at home and can at the same time collaborate with their mates. The teacher can have an insight into the whole process of their work and can accompany them. He has the role of a moderator wo supports them and gives feedback.

The pupils can work together but are seperatly working on individual ideas. There can be a product in the end that has been created together. All students participated and needed to contribute. There is not the chance to be left out or to let the others do the job as the teacher can see on the Wiki who wrote what at what time.

Wikis can be used for doing creative writing tasks especially. They are a helful tool in writing about opinions and in collecting ideas.

Students are more likely to publish their ideas on Wikis then they are to write in their notebooks or in their reading diaries. The idea of writing something that will be read later by others is motivating. The fact that they are working online could be challenging and fun, too. Besides that, the fact of working together on one product where the individual contribution counts makes the students feel their work being appreciated.

.

It requires a lot of knowledge about the tools and using a wiki. The teacher must be familiar with the Web 2.0 and he or she is asked to check the students posts and comment on them on a regular base.

I expect to learn more about the web 2.0 in this class

I am really interested how to use the web 2.0 in the classroom in an interactive way.

I am curious to get to know about the possiblities of the web 2.0.

I would like to know more about selecting from the huge variety of options to learn EFL with the web 2.0.
